Second Philanthropy Satellite Program 7 p.m. on Sept. 9 in 42 Iowa counties A second in a series of four statewide satellite meetings on Community Philanthropy will air at 7:00 p.m. on September 9th at 42 county locations across Iowa. The panel includes Johnny Danos of the Greater Des Moines Community Foundation, Darryl Ahnemann of Ahnemann Associates, Nancy Van Milligen, Greater Dubuque Community Foundation; and Mark Edelman, Community Vitality Center Director and ISU Extension Economist. . Rick Morain, publisher of the Jefferson Bee & Herald and Community Vitality Center Board Chair will moderate the panel. After a few opening comments and short presentations, the panel will respond to questions called in from across the state. The satellite program will be one hour in length and will be followed by local discussions at most locations. The local discussions will focus on progress made since the 1st satellite program and next steps to be taken prior to the next programs in the series. The next programs are scheduled for October 25th and November 29th. Recent interest in this topic has been fueled by discussion at several recent events, CVC’s Transfer of Wealth Study, and new incentives for philanthropy approved by the Iowa General Assembly and Governor in 2003 and 2004. The latest legislation establishes a new state revenue mechanism that will distribute half of one percent of gambling revenues annually to non-gambling counties equally for allocation to non-profits and charities through qualified community foundations and affiliates. CVC is partnering with ISU Extension, the Iowa Council on Foundations, the Iowa Department of Economic Development, Iowa Area Development Group, and Iowa Nonprofit Resources Center in sponsoring the program series. To find the nearest meeting location, please visit the ISU Extension Calendar at: http://dbs.extension.iastate.edu/calendar/ and enter “Communities” for category and “September” for the month, or contact your County Extension Office to express interest in attending the nearest site or having a site hosted locally. Copies of the video from the first and second satellite programs will also be available at many County Extension Office location or you may contact the CVC by email: cvc@iastate.edu . Community Entrepreneurship Academy to be in Fairfield on Oct 20 The Community Vitality Center is partnering with the Fairfield Entrepreneurs Association and other sponsors to host a statewide Community Entrepreneurship Academy on October 20th, in Fairfield. In addition to several nationally known experts in rural community entrepreneurship, the program also features community entrepreneurship programs from Iowa communities including community tools, entrepreneurial networks, and rural entrepreneurial capital. The program also features local entrepreneurs who will describe the community’s support systems, culture, and factors that contributed to Fairfield's entrepreneurial success and national recognition. Fairfield is a unique rural community of less than 10,000 people that won the 2003 National Community Entrepreneurship Award from the Kauffman Foundation and National Center for Small Communities. Tours will also be given to local entrepreneurial businesses and ventures. The conference is very content rich and covers a lot of territory in a short time period! To fully absorb and retain the best ideas and appropriate resources, communities are encouraged to identify four or five leaders who can attend as teams. Community leaders from diverse interests are encouraged to attend including those from economic development, local government, chambers, bankers, utilities, extension, agriculture, education, health care, telecommunications, nonprofits, faith-based groups.. The conference is open to all citizens who are interested in examining what can be done to support and stimulate entrepreneurial activities in nonmetro areas across the state. Registration is $35 received by October 12th and $50 thereafter through October 20th. Registrations should be sent to Becky Johnson, blj@iastate.edu , CVC, 478 Heady Hall, Ames, 50011-3091 or by calling 515-294-3000. CVC Partners with RUPRI Rural E-ship Center on Case Study CVC staff and Don Macke, Co-Director of the Rural Policy Research Institute's (RUPRI) Rural Entrepreneurship Center based in Lincoln, NE are collaborating to conduct a case study of Fairfield, Iowa. Interviews with local leaders were conducted during a two-day joint site visit during late August. The intent is to release a report this Fall. The goal of the case study is to document the recent emergence of entrepreneurs, entrepreneurship support programs, networks, strategies, and the lessons learned so that leaders from other communities might be able to gain insights and assess likely opportunities and consequences if similar approaches were attempted elsewhere.
